Fluidstack is a GPUaaS provider that is partnering with Anthropic to operate AI datacenters for Anthropic’s exclusive use.

Fluidstack’s role in the AI stack seems a bit tricky. For example, as part of their partnership with Anthropic…1

  • They lease land and power from a third party (e.g., Hut 8, TeraWulf, Cipher Mining)
  • The third party develops the land and builds the datacenter
  • Fluidstack deploys and operates the accelerators, networks, and storage within each datacenter(?)
  • Anthropic runs its workloads on Fluidstack’s infrastructure
  • Google agrees to bail out Fluidstack if Fluidstack cannot honor its lease terms over time

So it seems like Fluidstack buffers Anthropic from owning land, signing power agreements, and managing physical infrastructure.

Scale

Fluidstack is deploying tens of billions of dollars of Google TPUs as part of a $50B partnership between Anthropic and Fluidstack.2 Specifically,

Google’s chip business began to turn heads in December when Broadcom’s chief executive, Hock Tan, said that the company had sold 11 billion.

Anthropic is installing these chips in data centers it is building with a company called Fluidstack, the three people familiar with the projects said. As Fluidstack takes on debt to build these data centers, Google is also backstopping the deal, meaning it has agreed to repay the debt if Fluidstack is unable to, the people said.
