Stargate Project

Stargate is a massive infrastructure AI datacenter buildout project led by OpenAI, SoftBank, and MGX. The first Stargate site is in Abilene.

The stated cost for the project is $500billion,andSoftBankhasalreadycommitted$100 billion.

Stargate 1 / Abilene

Project Ludicrous is a datacenter buildout in Abilene where Crusoe and OCI will build a supercomputer based on Blackwell GPUs.

It will have eight buildings with “up to” 50,000 GPUs per building,¹ and 64,000 B200 GPUs are expected to be deployed there by 2026.²

As of 2025, has the infrastructure being built out for two of those buildings. This amounts to 200 MW and 100,000 Blackwell GPUs. The cost of the infrastructure buildout was around $1.1billion.{[}^{1}0]Giventhebillingofa206MW,$3.4 billion datacenter development,³¹ this implies that the cost of the contents of these datacenters is $2.3 billion.

The site has plans to increase to 1.2 GW “in two years”⁴¹ which aligns with the ambition to build eight buildings.

Physical infrastructure

Abilene was chosen because of its proximity to excess wind power.

The Crusoe development is occurring on a 1000-acre site owned by Lancium that is dubbed the Lancium Clean Campus. As of 2025, it had two datacenters under development:

1. A 482,000 sqft facility with an estimated cost of $292 million whose construction began in June 2024 and will be completed by May 2025, with $140 million in tenant improvements to be completed by September 2025⁵
2. A 484,960 sqft facility with an estimated cost of $292 million whose construction began in September 2024 and will be completed in September 2025, with $384 million in tenant improvements to be completed by December 2025.⁵

An application to construct a 360.5 MW simple cycle gas-fired power plant at the Abilene site were filed in January 2025.⁶ This will serve as backup power for the site¹ and will not be connected to the grid.⁶ GE Vernova and Solar Turbines are each providing half of the turbines.⁶

This datacenter complex will use dry cooling.¹
